Women's autumn jackets – how to choose the right jacket for a Swedish autumn

A women's autumn jacket needs to handle three types of days: the mild morning, the afternoon that turns, and the evening that became colder than the forecast promised. That is why it is harder to buy than a winter jacket – a winter jacket has one job, an autumn jacket has four.

In this guide, we go through which types of jackets actually see you through a Swedish autumn, how to choose the right warmth without overheating, what to look for regarding material and fit, how to layer underneath the jacket, plus the colors and shoes that make the jacket useful all season long.

Would you rather go straight to the items? All our women's autumn jackets are gathered here – quilted, checkered, lined, and water-repellent models. Read on if you want to know which type can handle your autumn.

When the autumn jacket takes over – and from what

The autumn jacket is the garment between the trench coat and the winter jacket, and that period is longer in Sweden than most people expect. From the end of August until well into November, the daily temperature is often between five and fifteen degrees – a range where a coat is too thin in the morning and a down jacket is too warm in the middle of the day.

It is precisely that range that determines the purchase. A jacket that only works at ten degrees is a jacket you will use for three weeks. One that can handle five to fifteen, with the right layers underneath, is the one you will put on every morning for three months.

Practically, this means two things: the jacket should be easy to open without losing its shape, and it should handle you wearing a sweater one day and just a blouse the next. If you want to compare it with a heavier alternative, we have a separate guide on women's winter jackets.

The four types of jackets that handle a Swedish autumn

Four models do almost all the work, and they solve different problems:

  • Quilted jacket – light padding, low weight, packable. The most useful in the five to twelve-degree range, and one that doesn't mind being left in the car.
  • Tailored jacket – structured shoulder, clean lines. Autumn's answer to the blazer when you want to look put together while still having a layer.
  • Fleece jacket – warm in relation to its weight, soft against the skin. Best for dry, windy days and as a mid-layer under a shell jacket.
  • Waterproof jacket with a hood – a rainy autumn is not just a theory in Sweden. A hood that stays put in the wind is the difference between wearing the jacket and leaving it at home.

If you only have one, choose the quilted one. If you have two, add the waterproof one – together they cover nine autumn days out of ten.

Right warmth: thin, padded, or lined?

The most common source of error is buying something too warm. A jacket that is too warm will be taken off and carried on your arm, and then it won't be warming you at all.

The rule of thumb is that the jacket should feel slightly cool for the first few minutes outside. Your body warms up within five minutes of walking; if the jacket feels perfectly comfortable at the door, it will be too warm after a block. This is especially true if you commute by bus or subway, where there are many warm minutes.

Calculate it like this: a thin, unshaped jacket handles ten to fifteen degrees; a light padded one, five to twelve; a lined or thicker quilted one, zero to eight. The overlap is intentional – that is where the sweater underneath makes the difference.

Material and fit – what makes the difference

Regarding materials, look at three things: how they handle moisture, how they breathe, and how they look after a season.

Polyester and nylon dry quickly and hold their shape, which is why almost all quilted jackets are made from these materials. Wool and wool blends look more expensive and stay warm even when slightly damp, but they don't like rain without an umbrella. Fleece offers the most warmth per gram but does not block wind well – it needs a shell on top when it's windy.

The fit is determined at the shoulder and sleeve, not the waist. The shoulder seam should lie on the shoulder, not below it, otherwise the jacket looks borrowed regardless of the size. The sleeve should end at the wrist when your arm hangs straight down – if it covers half your hand, the entire silhouette becomes heavier. And you should be able to cross your arms in front of your chest without it feeling tight across your back; if the jacket can't handle that, it can't handle a sweater underneath either.

Length dictates the rest. A short jacket lifts the waist and works best with straight trousers and jeans; hip-length is the most neutral; a long line provides the calmest line over dresses and skirts but requires a slimmer silhouette underneath.

Layering under the jacket

The autumn jacket is rarely the whole answer – it is the outermost of three layers, and the other two do at least as much work.

Closest to the body, something thin: a long-sleeved top, a camisole, or a thin turtleneck. Then the warming layer: a knit sweater, a cardigan, or a fleece. Outermost is the jacket, which breaks the wind and moisture. The point is that you can remove the middle layer indoors without standing there in just the jacket.

A few things to avoid: Two thick layers under a jacket that is already padded will be warm for five minutes and stiff for the rest – choose one thick layer or two thin ones. And a chunky, coarse knit sweater under a fitted jacket almost never works; if you need that sweater, get a jacket with a bit more room. More on that in our guide to women's knit sweaters.

Color, shoes, and common mistakes

The autumn jacket is worn over everything else, every day, for three months. That argues for a color that works with more than one outfit: black, navy, dark green, beige, or a warm brown. If you want a jacket with color, treat it like other items – then it becomes fun instead of dictating your choices.

Your shoes can easily be heavier than in the summer. A boot balances a padded jacket; a thin sneaker under a voluminous jacket makes the whole silhouette look top-heavy. If you have a short jacket, sneakers work great because the proportions are already lighter.

The three mistakes we see most often: the jacket is too warm and therefore not used, the hood is decorative rather than functional, and the sleeve is too long. The last one is the easiest to check before buying and the hardest to live with afterward.

Our favorites right now

Three autumn jackets that each cover a part of the season:

The trench coat is usually bought based on looks and regretted based on fit, and three details are decisive. First, fabric weight: a dense gabardine resists autumn rain without feeling like a raincoat, while lighter blends wrinkle at the shoulder and are better suited for indoor days. Then the shoulder seam – it should lie on the outer edge of the shoulder, because if it sits below, the entire silhouette becomes rounded, and this is most visible when the coat is worn open. Finally, the length, which is the most common mistake: just below the knee suits most people, while a midi-length model needs to be worn open so as not to shorten the legs. The belt is tied in a knot at the side, never in the buckle straight at the front – the buckle flattens the waist and draws the eye outward. Frequently asked questions

When do you switch to an autumn jacket?

When the daily minimum temperature stays below ten degrees for several days in a row – in southern Sweden, usually from late August, earlier further north. The morning temperature determines it, not the afternoon.

Which autumn jacket is the warmest?

A lined or thicker quilted jacket provides the most warmth, but fleece provides the most warmth in relation to its weight. The difference is that fleece does not break the wind – in windy weather, a thin windproof jacket warms more than a thick fleece.

How do I know if the autumn jacket is the right size?

The shoulder seam should lie on the shoulder, the sleeve should end at the wrist, and you should be able to cross your arms in front of your chest without it being tight across the back. If it can't handle the latter, you won't have room for a sweater underneath.

Can you wear an autumn jacket over a dress?

Yes, but the length is key. A long-line or hip-length jacket works over midi and maxi dresses; a short jacket fits best over a knee-length dress. Avoid a jacket that ends in the middle of the hip over a long dress.

Which color of autumn jacket lasts the longest?

Black, navy, dark green, and beige, as they work with almost your entire wardrobe. A jacket is worn every day for three months, which makes neutral a practical choice rather than a boring one.

Does an autumn jacket need to be waterproof?

Not if you only have one jacket and commute short distances – then warmth is more important. If you have two jackets, the second one should be waterproof, because it's the rain, not the cold, that determines if the jacket is used in October.

Summary

The autumn jacket should be chosen according to the range it needs to handle, not for the coldest day. A lightly quilted jacket covers most of the season, a waterproof one with a functional hood covers the rest, and fleece is the answer for when it's dry and windy. Choose something that feels slightly cool at the door rather than something that is perfectly comfortable right away, check the shoulder and sleeve length before anything else, and let the mid-layer do the work when the weather turns.
