Being a wedding guest is more fun when you know exactly what to wear. The right dress allows you to dance, sit through dinner, and be photographed without having to think about your outfit for even a second – and that starts long before you stand in front of your wardrobe.
In this guide, we walk you through how to read the dress code on the invitation, which length and style suit which code, which colors work and which you should avoid, how to adapt your outfit to the season, what to wear over your dress when the evening turns cool, and which shoes and accessories will last all day.

Start with the dress code on the invitation
Almost everything you need to know is already on the invitation. If it says kavaj (jacket), it is the most common Swedish wedding code: a dressy outfit at knee or calf length, not floor-length. Mörk kostym (dark suit) is a step up and allows for a longer dress. Frack (tails) or högtidsdräkt (formal attire) means a floor-length evening gown. If nothing at all is stated, kavaj is the safe interpretation.
The most common mistake is to read the code as a description of what the men should wear and then guess freely for yourself. The code applies to the entire party, and it primarily dictates the length. We have gone through every code in detail in our guide to wedding dress codes, and dress code kavaj for women takes a deep dive into the most common code. Systembolaget has a concise overview of Swedish dress codes that is surprisingly useful: Systembolaget.
Length and style by dress code
Length is what makes an outfit read as right or wrong, more than the color and more than the fabric. For kavaj, the midi dress is the most accurate style – it is dressy enough for the church and mobile enough for the dance floor. For mörk kostym, both midi and maxi work. For frack, floor-length is the rule.
Choose the style based on your body shape rather than trends. A wrap dress or a dress cinched under the bust provides a defined waist without being tight; an A-line gives movement to the skirt, and a form-fitting satin dress requires that you are comfortable being in focus. Our guide to dress lengths mini, midi, and maxi goes through where each length actually falls, and which dress fits your body shape helps you choose the style.

Colors you can – and shouldn't – wear
Two colors are still off-limits for guests: white in all its shades, including ivory, champagne, and off-white, as they compete with the bride, and all-black unless the couple has explicitly requested it. Everything else is open, and bright colors have become significantly more common in recent seasons.
Deep, saturated tones almost always work: bottle green, burgundy, royal blue, rust brown, and plum. They photograph beautifully, they work in both church and party venues, and they are easy to wear for most skin tones. If you want to read about a specific color, we have written separate guides on wearing a black dress to a wedding, red dress, brown dress, and beige dress – plus a summary of which colors you shouldn't wear to a wedding.
Adapt to the season
A wedding in September has completely different requirements than one in June. Fall and winter weddings often involve a cold church, a walk across gravel between the ceremony and dinner, and an evening that ends outdoors. In those cases, heavier fabrics – satin, jacquard, thicker viscose, and lined lace – beat thin chiffon.
A long-sleeved dress is the simplest solution for an autumn wedding and avoids the question of what to wear over your shoulders entirely; we have an entire guide about long-sleeved dresses for weddings. For summer weddings, the opposite applies: linen, cotton, and light, breathable viscose, and a style that doesn't stick to you when it gets hot.
| Dress code | Dress to choose | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Kavaj | Midi dress in lace, satin, or viscose | Knee- to calf-length. Never floor-length. |
| Mörk kostym | Midi or maxi in matte, heavier materials | One step dressier than kavaj. |
| Frack / högtidsdräkt | Floor-length evening gown | Gloves and long jewelry belong here. |
| No code specified | Midi dress in a saturated color | Interpret as kavaj – never white. |
| Outdoor wedding | A-line or wrap, block heel | Thin heels sink into grass and gravel. |

Blazer, cardigan, or shawl over the dress
This is the detail that is most often forgotten and most noticeable in photos. A blazer over the dress is the dressiest option and works particularly well with a simple, form-fitting dress – choose a tailored blazer in the same color family or a distinct contrast, never in an almost-but-not-quite-matching shade.
A nice knitted cardigan is softer and suits rustic weddings and daytime ceremonies; a long knitted cardigan in fine-knit yarn reads as a deliberate choice rather than a last-minute fix. A shawl in silk or wool is the most discreet option and takes up the least space in your bag. Our guide on what to wear over a sleeveless dress goes through all three. Femina has listed jackets and blazers that work over a party dress: Femina.
Shoes and accessories that last all day
A wedding means eight to twelve hours on your feet, some of which may be outdoors. A block heel or wedge heel is almost always a better choice than a stiletto – they don't sink into grass, they are easy to walk in on gravel, and they last until after midnight. If you have a floor-length dress, you can wear a much more comfortable shoe without anyone seeing it.
Keep accessories few and purposeful: a small bag that fits your phone, lipstick, and plasters, a pair of earrings that show up in photos, and skip the necklace if the dress has details around the neckline. If you need help with undergarments, we have written about the right bra for your dress and what to wear under a dress.
Our current favorites
Three dresses that work as a wedding guest without you having to think twice:
- Elegant midi dress in lace with scoop neckline – the right length for kavaj, and the lace ensures it handles both church and dinner.
- Sophie | V-neck maxi dress in satin – for mörk kostym and evening ceremonies, with a drape that photographs beautifully.
- Mia | Form-fitting maxi dress in satin – the dressy version when the code is formal and you want to feel confident.
Are you two attending the wedding? If it says mörk kostym on the invitation, it applies to him as well: a navy blue or charcoal wool suit, light shirt, tie, and polished leather shoes. Black is not an incorrect color but feels stricter than it needs to be, and a light linen suit only fits when the dress code is relaxed and the ceremony is outdoors in the summer. The jacket should fit in the shoulders and the trousers should break perfectly at the shoe. The full guide on colors, fit, and dress codes can be found in suits for men at weddings.
Frequently asked questions
What should I wear as a wedding guest in 2026?
Start with the dress code on the invitation. If it says kavaj – as it does for most Swedish weddings – a midi dress at knee or calf length is correct. Saturated colors like bottle green, burgundy, and plum are dominant right now, and long sleeves have become significantly more common even for summer weddings.
Can you wear a black dress to a wedding?
Yes, in most contexts today – but read the couple and the occasion. Black works best for evening weddings and in urban settings, and feels friendlier if you break it up with colored accessories. We cover this in detail in our guide on wearing a black dress to a wedding.
How long can the dress be?
The length is dictated by the dress code, not your height. Kavaj means knee to calf, mörk kostym allows for maxi, frack requires floor-length. A floor-length dress for kavaj is the most common over-dressing mistake.
Can you wear the same dress to several weddings?
Absolutely, and it is the wisest purchase you can make. Swap the blazer for a shawl, change your shoes and accessories, and the outfit reads differently. A midi dress in a saturated tone is the most reusable investment.
What do you wear over the dress at an autumn wedding?
A blazer if the code is formal, a fine-knit cardigan if the wedding is rustic, a wool or silk shawl if you want to be able to take it off quickly. Choose based on the dress material – thin fabric handles a heavier layer, thick fabric wants something light.
Which shoes handle an outdoor wedding?
Block heels, wedge heels, or an elegant flat shoe. Stilettos sink into grass and gravel and turn the ceremony into a balancing act. If the dress is floor-length, no one will see which shoe you chose anyway.
Summary
Read the dress code first – it determines the length and thereby the entire outfit. Choose a saturated color, avoid white, and interpret black according to the occasion. Adapt the material to the season, plan what to wear over your shoulders before you get to the church, and choose a shoe you can walk in for twelve hours. If you do that, you never need to think about your dress again once you have put it on.
The dress is chosen, but the church is cool and the evening always gets colder than you think. The blazer is the layer that handles both without reading as outerwear - blazer over a dress goes through which length suits mini, midi, and maxi, and when to take it off.
