Kraft is festive but not fancy. Think summer dress rather than ball gown: something you can sit in for a long time at a long table, preferably with sleeves or a cardigan to pull on when the evening cools down. Knee-length and midi are the most common lengths – they are easy to move in and don't get caught under the bench.

Three things worth considering

• It's getting colder than you think. In August, the temperature drops quickly after sunset. Choose a dress with sleeves, or bring a cardigan.
• Crayfish are sticky. Patterned and floral are forgiving – a splash is barely visible. Light solid-colored silk is not.
• You sit down all evening. A high waist and flowing skirt are more comfortable over several hours at the table than something tight.
